In some parts of the country, particularly in areas of social disadvantage, at least 50% of children are starting school with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN). Out of this populatiion 10% of children present with long term or persistent SLCN. This includes:

  • 7% of children with a specific language impairment; speech, language & communication is their main area of difficulty.
  • 3% of children with SLCN as part of another condition for example heagin impairment, general development delay/ learning difficulties, autism etc.
  • Approximately 1% with severe & complex SLCN which will prevent them from expressing even basic needs.
