Children's Speech and Language Therapy

Advice for Parents and Carers

Learning to talk is one of the hardest things to do. Some children find it difficult to develop speech & language which can lead to them not making the progress we expect. They may find it hard to:

  • Speak clearly
  • Use words & sentences
  • Understand conversation
  • Communicate with others

Some infants, children and young people can experience difficulties with oral motor aspects of eating and drinking. This may be due to issues relating to their development, especially when this impacts on their muscle tone and coordination which causes difficulties with sucking, biting, chewing and/or swallowing or with getting used to different textures.

This may be due to a variety of reasons such as being born very premature, conditions such as Cerebral Palsy, Downs Syndrome, Pierre Robin Syndrome which can impact on oral motor aspects in different ways, lack of experience of oral feeding due to being non- oral / tube fed for prolonged period, or a brain injury.
