Locala 0-19 Service

5-19

The Locala School Nursing service provides health and care support and advice for children and young people aged 5-19 years (and up to 25-year-olds with SEND) across Kirklees.

Our team is made up of specialist community public health nurses (School Nurses), community staff nurses, child development practitioners, and school nurse assistants. Some of our school nurses are also dual-qualified as health visitors, covering the entire 0-19 age range to provide comprehensive support for children and families.

The school nursing service provides comprehensive support and guidance to children, young people, and their families. The key aspects of this service include:

  • Delivering the National Child Measurement Programme, including weighing and measuring children in Reception and Year 6.
  • Offering universal screening for vision and audiology (if a concern is identified) for Reception children, with onward referrals to appropriate services.
  • Providing online self-assessment health questionnaires to children entering Reception, helping to identify any early concerns and ensure a holistic view of their health and well-being.
  • Offering advice and support around sexual health, substance misuse, and other risky behaviours, ensuring that children and young people have access to the information and care they need.
  • Providing specialist advice and support to children in need of protection, including those on Child Protection and Child in Need plans and those receiving Early Help.
  • Offering signposting, advice, and referrals to appropriate services following a holistic health needs assessment. The school nurse will ensure that children and families are connected with the right resources for further support.
  • Providing free online wellbeing courses via Sollihul to empower parents and caregivers with the knowledge they need to support their children's health and development

Important Service Update: Changes to School Nursing Support:

Due to recent changes, School Nurses will no longer provide direct support for some areas that were previously part of our service such as behaviour, sleep and emotional health. However, if the issue is related to safeguarding, we will continue to offer support.

While we are no longer able to offer direct help in certain areas, we are still here to guide you to other services that can provide the necessary support. You can find a list of these services and how to access them by clicking here.
