Immunisation Service

What to expect at your appointment

What to expect at your appointment?

The immunisation nurse will carry out a full assessment with you and your child to ensure it is appropriate to carry out the immunisations on the day

This will include how well your child is, please be advised that if your child is unwell it may not be possible to go ahead with vaccinations on the day and you will be invited back at a later date

Expected immunisations may change due to age and immunisation history. It may be appropriate to give other vaccinations on the day to ensure your child is up to date, or not give a vaccination due to age – this will be discussed with you on the day.

Your baby / child may become upset during vaccination– please be reassured this is normal and they usually recover quickly. In the past, it was sometimes suggested about breastfeeding or giving time for babies to recover inbetween each vaccine, however we have found it is often most appropriate to be as quick as possible to limit the time taken and then baby / child can have cuddles and reassurance from their parent / carer. We understand that this can be upsetting for parents but please be reassured that your child will usually calm down quite quickly.

It is our goal to deliver a sensitive, effective and efficient service for you. However, we do have to be aware of other patients waiting and it may therefore not always be possible to accommodate extra time for things like feeding your baby post immunisation. However, if the appointment time has ended and you need more time to settle / dress your baby we can offer facilities for you to do this.

Post immunisation side effects vary with each vaccine. Please follow the links on our website for individual vaccine advice, side effects and post immunisation care.
