Frequently Asked Questions

How to contact us to change/cancel an appointment or ask a question?

Please contact Single Point of Contact (SPOC) on 0300 304 5555

Do we provide transport?

Unfortunately we do not provide transport.

Can I park at the children’s centre?

There is a small carpark onsite with two disabled parking spaces available.

Is the children's centre wheelchair accessible?

The venue is wheelchair accessible.

Do you have toilet facilities or a changing place toilet?

We have toilets in the waiting area and in the main corridor. We have a disabled toilet (you may need to ask for the access to the toilet). We do not have a changing places toilet but are planning to have a similar set up in the near future with hoisting. We do have a mobile hoist and can support changing in a clinic room.

Can my child be seen out of school hours?

Unfortunately, we have limited appointments before and after school, it is likely the first appointment will be in school time, we will try and support where possible and keep disruption to a minimum.

When will my child be seen?

Your child’s referral will be triaged by a therapist and place on the waiting list, you will receive a letter to make you aware of this. We aim to see all new referrals within 18 weeks. You can contact single point of contact if there is worsening of their condition to update the team.

How often will my child be seen?

This is dependent on the issue and needs of the child and the therapists judgement. It is important to note we offer support and advice with the aim for parents/carers and the child to be able to manage their condition at home. We expect this to be carried out at home consistently and will change/update the advice as needed.

What to expect from my appointment face to face?

We will ask questions about birth history, developmental milestones, and reason for referral. Please bring shorts for leg problems and a vest if you are coming with an arm or a back problem.

An assessment will be completed and decision about ongoing needs will be made, you may get a therapy/exercise programme or onward referrals. The first appointment will be approximately 60 minutes.

We are not wearing masks at this time, but if you would like to wear one yourself or ask the therapist to put one on, we are happy to do so.

Prior to your appointment at the children's centre or home, you will get a text to check you are well and do not have signs and symptoms of the Coronavirus the day before your appointment.

Please do not come to the appointment if anyone is unwell at home or you may have been in contact with someone else with Coronavirus. Where possible please attend with one child and one adult at the appointment time, this due to the limited space in the waiting area to allow social distancing.

What to expect from my appointment on the phone?

We will first ring you to ask about the reason you were referred into the service, this may include:

  • Birth history
  • Developmental milestones
  • What is the issue and how it affects the child

Depending on the child’s age we will want to speak to them too, so we can get a full understanding of the problem.

In most cases we will then end the phone call and turn it into a video call, this is so we can see the child and complete our assessment. We may ask them to do some activities or just show us how they are moving in certain positions. This will depend on their age and what the concern is.

We will then talk you through what we have found and give advice, this might be positioning to play advice, developmental ideas, exercises or stretches.

How to prepare for your video call?

  • The Admin Team will ring to help you check that you have right technology to do this, you can use your phone, tablet or laptop (anything which you have the internet on)
  • For the appointment, make sure you are in a quiet well lit room
  • Check that you will be able to see the child, sometimes this is easier with a tablet or laptop
  • If using your phone and you have someone else at home ask them to help
  • Write down any questions you want to ask before the appointment
