Children's Occupational Therapy

We are a team of qualified Occupational Therapists and a clinical care assistant who provide Occupational Therapy input to children and young people across the North Kirklees area.  We are based at the Child Development Centre on the grounds of Dewsbury and District Hospital.

Occupational therapy can help children grow, learn, have fun, socialise and play so they can develop, and support them to reach their full potential.

We provide a child centred, family orientated approach and will see children in a variety of settings most appropriate to them. We enable the child to reach their maximum developmental potential and gain independence in performing daily living activities.

We provide support with:

  • Self-care, leisure and productivity including dressing, feeding, play, access to the community and nurseries/schools
  • Working with parents, carers and families to maximise the child's potential
  • Specialist advice to families and schools
  • Advising and educating parents, carers and schools
  • Completion of My Support Plans and Educational Health Care plans following an assessment
  • Specialist assessments which could include equipment, functional, pencil and perceptual skills
  • Work alongside and closely with other professionals including, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, educational staff and other outside agencies (Wheelchair services and Adaptations service)
  • Signpost to appropriate services or information that will be useful in supporting your child's development

Children can be referred to our service by a Paediatrician or GP.
