Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

All children develop at their own pace, but some may need extra support to learn, communicate, or navigate the world around them. Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) can include difficulties with speech and language, learning, physical development, or social and emotional wellbeing. Support is available to help children and young people with SEND to reach their full potential.

If you have concerns about your child’s development, speak to your health visitor, GP, or early years provider. Schools and nurseries also have a Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) who can offer advice. In Kirklees, the Local Offer provides information on services, support, and activities for children and young people with SEND, from early years through to adulthood.  Local Offer Home | Kirklees SEND Local Offer

ADHD/Autism

Every child is unique, and neurodivergent children – including those with autism, ADHD, or other differences in thinking and learning – may experience the world in their own way. Understanding your child’s strengths and challenges can help you to support their development and wellbeing. There are a range of services and resources available to help families, from practical strategies to specialist support.

You can find advice, local services, and peer support through the Kirklees Local Offer. National organisations like the National Autistic Society and ADHD Foundation also provide useful information, guidance, and support networks. If you have concerns about your child’s development, speak to your health visitor, GP, or school SENCO for further advice.

Portage/Early Years SEN

If you have concerns about your child’s development, there is support available to help them learn, communicate, and grow. Kirklees offers specialist early years support, including Portage – a home-visiting service for young children with additional needs. Portage practitioners work with families to support their child’s development through play and tailored activities.

To find out more about early years SEN support and Portage in Kirklees, visit the Kirklees Local Offer. You can also speak to your health visitor, GP, or childcare provider, who can guide you to the right support for your child.
