Bed Wetting Alarms

Bed Wetting Alarms are a first line treatment option recommended by NICE guidelines. They can be used in conjunction with other medications.

If your child is still bed wetting after a period of following self help tips (see Bed Wedding page here) then a member of the Children’s Continence team will carry out a bladder & bowel assessment and may then recommend a bed wetting alarm. The alarm has a sensor which attaches to your child’s underwear/pyjama bottoms. If the sensor gets wet, it sets the alarm off and wakes your child up.

Over time, the alarm should help your child to learn when they need to wee and wake up to go to the toilet. Alarms usually need to be used for between four and twelve weeks. They work best when children are feeling motivated to get dry and families are prepared for some hard work at first. Motivation is helped by giving praise and support for drinking enough during the day, going for a wee regularly, getting up when the alarm sounds, helping to change their bed etc.
