Bed Wetting

Bed Wetting is common and often runs in families, most children will grow out of it. It is common for children under the age of 5 years to wet at night. Treatment such as medications are not licensed for children under 5 years.

Common causes of bed wetting can include:

  • not feeling the need to wee while sleeping
  • making too much wee at night
  • stress at home or school.

It helps to have enough drinks during the day to help tone your child’s bladder, avoid caffeine based drinks such as blackcurrant, fizzy, hot chocolate, tea and coffee.

It is important for your child to drink enough throughout the day and to empty their bladder regularly to strengthen the bladder muscle.

Using positive actions such as rewards for ‘good drinking’, using the toilet before bed and having their last drink at least one hour before bed can help. Using waterproof mattress covers and nappies/pull ups will help contain the urine.

It helps if children have access to a toilet at night.

If these tips do not work then contact your health professional who can offer support and referrals if required.
