Common Foot Problems - Nails

Nails naturally become a little thicker and more brittle or difficult to cut as we age. This is perfectly normal. However, there are some conditions where the nail grows abnormally – becoming particularly thick, curved, or misshapen, as shown in these examples.

Who is eligible for nail treatment?

The podiatry department will see you for treatment of an abnormal nail. This may be a one-off appointment for treatment and advice on how to self-manage the issue, or it may result in a referral for nail surgery to remove the nail.

  • PLEASE NOTE: Regular nail cutting is not provided by the Podiatry Department, even when the patient or their carers are unable to manage it themselves. Nail cutting is considered personal care, not a medical need. Only patients with a serious medical condition who are at increased risk of ulceration or infection will be seen on an ongoing basis.View our eligibility criteria.

If you do not meet the criteria, we suggest the following options:

  • Visit an independent podiatrist or chiropodist. Many offer home visits. We recommend choosing someone who is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). You can check registration at www.hcpc-uk.org.
  • The University of Huddersfield Podiatry Department runs a Nail Clinic, which costs approximately £15 per session. Tel: 01484 472201.
  • Age UK runs a foot care service. For more information, call 01484 535994.
  • You may choose to look after your own feet or ask a family member to help you.
