Common Foot Problems - Chilblains

Chilblains are small, itchy swellings on the skin that occur as a reaction to cold temperatures. They most often affect the body’s extremities, such as the toes, fingers, heels, ears and nose. Chilblains can be uncomfortable but rarely cause any permanent damage. They usually heal within a few weeks if further exposure to the cold is avoided.

Who is eligible?

Chilblains are not routinely treated on the NHS. However, if your feet are at risk (see eligibility criteria), you may be seen. Following the advice in the links above will help.

If you want treatment, seek the services of an independent HCPC-registered podiatrist — The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) | The HCPC — or the podiatry clinic at the University of Huddersfield: Podiatry Clinic - University of Huddersfield., or consult your pharmacist or GP.
