Continence Advisory Service referral criteria

We only accept referrals from people who are registered with a Kirklees GP.

We are happy to take clinic referrals for advice on the management of the following problems:  

  • Long term bladder and/or bowel incontinence   
  • Bladder dysfunction such as urine urgency / urine frequency/ stress incontinence 
  • Bowel dysfunction such as chronic constipation, irritable bowel syndrome or other bowel conditions 
  • Vaginal prolapse with associated continence issues 
  • Pelvic floor dysfunction with associated continence issues 
  • 3rd or 4th degree tears of the perineum and continence problems associated with child birth 
  • Trial without catheter where the patient needs to be taught intermittent self-catheterisation (ISC) 
  • Urethral Stricture Therapy 

We do not take referrals for the following:  

  • Individuals who are not registered with a Kirklees GP practice  
  • Individuals receiving nursing care within a registered care home  
  • Children under the age of 18 years old   
  • Individuals leaking blood, mucus or debris from the rectum or vagina  
  • Urodynamics  
  • Bladder instillations  
  • Lack of sensation during sexual intercourse  
  • Pre-operative assessment and or suitability for Intermittent catheterisation

We are happy to provide Health Care Professionals with telephone advice for the following: 

  • The management of long term urethral catheterisation and associated problems 
  • Interpreting post void bladder scan results 
  • Intermittent catheterisation programmes for the management of stricture therapy or incomplete bladder emptying 
  • Interpreting urine residual volumes following intermittent catheterisation 
  • The effective use of containment products 

We are happy to provide individuals with telephone advice for the following: 

  • Intermittent catheterisation programmes for the management of stricture therapy or incomplete bladder emptying  
  • Interpreting urine residual volumes following intermittent catheterisation 
  • Purchasing continence products such as containment pads, bed protection and functional aids eg urinals and adapted clothing
