Day Wetting

Day Wetting is very common among children and young people.

The reasons why children day wet are varied. Sometimes children require more support to help them achieve dryness during the daytime, such as gentle reminders and rewards (stickers, praise). Reminding every 1 to 2 hours is frequent enough. Not using pull ups/nappies during the daytime can help the child recognise wetness and discomfort.

A good seating position and using a toilet seat and foot stool for boys (not standing for boys) and girls can help them feel secure. Some drinks can irritate the bladder such as blackcurrant, fizzy, hot chocolate, tea and coffee. They all contain caffeine and are known to contribute to day wetting. Water and sugar free dilute are healthy options.

Amounts of fluids children drink daily is important to help tone the bladder, reducing fluids will not reduce day wetting. Many children do not drink enough at school. School teams will support access to toilets and drinks. Use a drink bottle to help your child know and see how much they need to drink at home and school. Set small goals and use rewards.

Alongside healthy drinking, emptying the bladder throughout the day is important. Often these small actions can improve day wetting, however if they do not then speak to your health professional.
