National Breastfeeding Week 2022

National Breastfeeding Week 2022

This year's National Breastfeeding Week (27 June – 3 July) is highlighting that 'Everyone has a part to play in helping mums to breastfeed'.

Getting support from a partner, family member or significant other is very helpful when you're breastfeeding.

Practical ways partners can help with breastfeeding include:

- giving emotional and practical support – praising and encouraging someone who is breastfeeding can help to build their confidence

- arranging paternity leave – talk to your employer about paternity leave early on, so you can plan leave that suits your family's needs

- making life easier – for example, bring your partner dinner if the baby wants to feed at the same time, or bring them a drink of water and a magazine while they're feeding the baby as it is thirsty work for mum too, or perhaps arrange for family or friends to keep your partner company while you're at work

- doing your bit around the home – so your partner can focus on caring for the baby and getting breastfeeding off to a good start

- providing some stress relief – if you have young children, take the stress away from your partner by keeping them entertained when the baby is feeding

- getting involved in your baby's care – bathing your baby, changing nappies and reading to them are great ways to get close to your baby.

Locala colleagues are supporting National Breastfeeding Week through their work with mothers of babies and young children across Calderdale and Kirklees.

- Businesses and venues across Calderdale are offering a warm welcome to breastfeeding mothers as part of the Welcome to Breastfeed Calderdale scheme. Open to all local venues, Welcome to Breastfeed Calderdale sets out a series of simple standards that businesses and venues should adopt so that mothers have a comfortable welcoming space in which to feed their child. Find out more on the Welcome to Breastfeed Calderdale web pages where you can also find a list of more than 30 venues already taking part, with more joining every month.

- Our Thriving Kirklees colleagues have collated a range of online resources to help breastfeeding mums and give guidance to people who are supporting them. You can find advice on feeding your baby as well as more general help and advice for new parents.

- Why not view short films on Breastfeeding by the Human Milk initiative or this one on How Lactation Works by the Assoiciation of Breastfeeding Mothers.
