Locala’s Clinic in a Van Addressing Health Inequalities

Locala colleagues have delivered over one thousand clinical interventions and various health promotion where the van has visited galas, fayres, schools, shopping centres, carnivals, and PRIDE events and other venues within West Yorkshire and Greater Manchester since July 2023.

The Clinical van pilot project working in partnership with EMS (one of the leading UK providers of medical units), is designed to meet health requirements, with a waiting area, and a separate clinical room where a variety of services visit our communities by bringing healthcare directly to them.

Services include GP support for vulnerable individuals, homeless people, and those living in emergency accommodation. There have also been free drop-in immunisation sessions, giving vaccines and advice for parents and children; wound care teams supporting our most vulnerable; engagement events; and sexual health outreach services.

Locala’s vision outlined within the new business strategy, Thrive, aims to offer innovative healthcare solutions, with dedication towards tackling health inequalities. Our clinical van is already making this a reality with fantastic results.

One recent example saw Locala’s speedy response to the current measles outbreak. Colleagues delivered approximately 450 immunisations over 12 days to marginalised groups and communities, all possible with the clinical van.

We are pleased to announce our clinical van has also been shortlisted in the category 'Most Impactful Project Addressing Health Inequalities' by the UK’s foremost celebration of collaboration in healthcare, the Health Service Journal Partnership Awards 2024.

Victoria Vallance, Locala’s Chief Nurse, said, “We are constantly looking for new ways to help people in our community, accessing health and wellbeing services as easily as possible, and this has already proved to be an exciting way of doing just that.”

Cassie Kendrew, Chief Commercial Officer at EMS Healthcare, said, “We are committed to supporting our partners in taking care into the heart of communities, where mobile clinics are making a significant difference to patients’ lives and the wellbeing of hard-to-reach communities. We look forward to the judges’ final decision with excitement and anticipation!”
