Projects supported in January 2022

In January 2022, Locala supported 30 community groups in Bradford, Calderdale and Kirklees with over £40,000 in grants through the community fund. We are all still seeing the effects of the pandemic, which had an impact on fundraising for many community and charity groups. The Locala Members Council and Locala’s Charities Committee agreed to increase the amount of funding available to groups, for the third year, from the usual amount of £10,000 up to £43,332 which will support the following 30 groups.


Batley LGBT Forum

The Batley LGBT Forum has been established to organise a family friendly LGBT pride event in Batley.

The funding will go towards the cost of hiring portable bathroom facilities for the event next summer.


Birchencliffe 31st Scouting Group

£1500

Scouting group based in North Huddersfield meet at St Phillips Community Centre, Birchencliffe.

Funding will support them to build an outdoor sheltered area for use by the scouting group and the other community groups who use the building.


Boothroyd Primary Academy

Boothroyd Primary Academy are based in Dewsbury.

Funding will support a range of activities for families and local people in a new community room. These activities will be focused on mental health, diet and nutrition, new parents and helping older people socialise with people from outside a local care home.


Calderdale Coaching Trust

The Calderdale Community Coaching Trust deliver projects across the district of Calderdale and neighbouring areas that lead to positive change, helping to improve health, well-being, education, and life chances for all our communities through the power of sport.

Funding will be used to upskill their volunteers through rugby league coaching courses, giving them the skills to transfer into their local community through the links they have within their 10 community rugby league clubs. The club will gain 5 new coaches within the local community with a target of 500 children taking advantage of these newly qualified coaches.


Community Network Group

The Community Network Group is a Calderdale based voluntary organisation who work with people on low incomes, people from BAME backgrounds and people who are socially isolated, supporting them to access social groups and learn new skills. The group are supported by multilingual volunteers and run drop in sessions and activities. 

Funding will pay for volunteer expenses; venue hire and stationary.


Creative Map CIC

The Creative Map CIC deliver online courses and in person workshops to adults and young people in order to improve their mental health. They deliver powerful creative activities proven to supercharge your wellbeing, self-expression, and personal growth.

Funding will support the delivery of two half-day workshops in Huddersfield, focusing on the connection between sound and emotion. 


Eden’s Forest CIC

Eden’s Forest CIC are a social enterprise supporting and improving the mental wellbeing for individuals of all ages and families based around engaging with nature.

This year they ran a six-week pilot (partially funded through their previous Community Fund grant) supporting parents with their mental health.

Funding will allow them to re-deliver this project to support more parents.


EdShift CIC

EdShift carry out activities which benefit people aged 4-16 in Calderdale and elsewhere; in communities of high deprivation where repeat offences of domestic and sexual violence are more prevalent.

Funding will support their SpotLight project, an arts based early intervention programme that supports children affected by domestic and or sexual violence through 8 hours of 1:1 sessions. Funding will specifically support the development of arts and music resources.


Flock with Friends

Senior's club run by Our Neighbourhood Nest in Thornhill, Dewsbury. They run a weekly group which alternates between a coffee morning and a luncheon club.

Funding will support the people attending the group with transport until the groups minibus is up and running and one of their volunteers has received appropriate training.


Grange Moor Brass Band

Grange Moor Brass Band is a Kirklees based organisation working to establish social cohesion across local communities through the mutual enjoyment of music.

The funding will support the renewal of resources to recruit and train more local young people to join the band, including the purchase of new uniforms.


Gwennies Getaways

Gwennie’s Getaways provide respite holidays and weekly memory cafés for people with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

The funding will support them to send six people and their families, carers, or support workers on a respite holiday to one of their caravans in 2022.


Happy Healthy You

Bradford based group helping people achieve positive mental and physical wellbeing goals.

Funding will support a walking group, online Zumba classes and a seasonal nature and health competition.


Hartshead Junior and Infant School

Hartshead Junior and Infant School is a semi-rural primary school in Hartshead, Liversedge.

They have recently completed the build of a library and nurture space for children. They would like to open this space up to families and the local community, providing weekly coffee mornings to signpost to support, to support school readiness and to set up a sewing group.


Hey Mama

Hey Mama are based in Idle, Bradford and their main aim is to provide mothers and their families affected by mental ill health a non-judgemental, safe, nurturing space.

The funding will support six family sessions, six creative sessions and two festive sessions for mothers and their families struggling with mental health.


Huddersfield Harambee Association

Huddersfield Harambee Association was established in 1982 to support Black Caribbean families who had settled in Huddersfield.

Funding will support the recruitment of a volunteer co-ordinator for up to six months, to re-establish their face-to-face activities and to support their members who are feeling hesitant about getting back together face to face post Covid.


Invictus Wellbeing

Charity supporting and improving the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people across West Yorkshire.

Funding will allow them to employ extra counsellors to bring down their waiting list which has extended due to Covid-19.


Loving Hands Outreach Team

£1500

Loving Hands Outreach Team provide an essential food parcel delivery service to those in poverty or at risk of being in poverty in the Dewsbury, Batley, Heckmondwike and Liversedge areas. They also provide help and support to those needing help accessing services regarding their health and well-being and are a friendly face at the door to those isolated or lonely.

Funding will go towards running a 4-week cookery course at the Howlands Centre in Dewsbury, for parents who want to learn basic cooking skills who are socially isolated. After the cooking course has finished, they would like to establish a monthly cookery club for 6 months. Families involved will also be offered a fortnightly food parcel.


Luck Lane Primary Academy

Luck Lane are a primary academy based in Huddersfield.

Funding will support the purchase of a programme and training package for teachers, children, and parents to manage mental health positively.


Parent Sanctuary

£1500

Kirklees based parent support group, formed as a result of Covid-19, providing a safe environment for parents to access activities outside with their babies and young children. They focus on mental and physical health benefits, connecting with peers and social activities and helping bonding and education by having time in nature.

Funding will support the on-going provision of core activities - Nature Walks for well-being, Parents Walk in the Park, Free town centre parent café and development of new breastfeeding/fourth trimester project in Holmfirth that has been part funded from the national lottery.


Roberttown Lane Preschool

Charity run Preschool offering affordable care for 2- to 5-year-olds.

Funding will allow them to develop their stay and play sessions to support the language and communication development of children. They will also access a training program for staff and purchase new resources.


Savile Town Women’s Association

Ladies’ social session based in Savile Town, Dewsbury, working to reduce social isolation. 

The group met regularly pre-Covid. The funding will be used for 6 months room hire to establish the face-to-face support group.


SEN Kids

Offering support for parents and carers with SEN children and hidden learning disabilities.

They will run a series of craft sessions for carers to take time out of their caring role and learn something new.


Sky Positive Minds

£1500

Batley based organisation, working with women, girls, and young children from Kirklees on mental wellbeing and resilience.

Funding will go towards an anti-bullying event, building on the success of a previous event. They will arrange a number of activities focused on strategies for coping with and learning around bullying. They will also invite local small businesses to showcase their products and raise their profile. Their emotional resilience program will be offered to anyone identified as needing support after the event.


Society for the Blind Dewsbury Batley and District/ Kirklees Visual Impairment Network/ Outlookers

The Society for the Blind aims to provide peer and practical support to people with sight loss. The charity suspended service during lockdown, and it will be merging with the Kirklees Visual Impairment Network (KVIN – now known as Outlookers) in the near future.

As restrictions eased, they were able to re-establish a weekly social group, with the support of KVIN staff and volunteers, at the Whitfield Centre. They are now looking to reintroduce some of their face-to-face groups, whilst making these accessible online to people who cannot attend in person. Funding will therefore allow them to purchase some equipment to allow people to connect with in person groups virtually.


Streetbikes CIC

Inclusive and accessible cycling charity based in Kirklees, West Yorkshire. Their goal is to enable more people to cycle in order to improve their health and wellbeing.

The funding will support the continuation of Mixed Ability cycling sessions by assisting with the rent of the track and the maintenance of bikes and potential funding for new additions to their fleet.


The Branch under RiverTree Trust

RiverTree Trust exists to oversee and administrate the work of Community Church Huddersfield, to own and operate the Jubilee Centre as a Community Centre in Paddock. It supports all of the associated community projects and activities under the community outreach called The Branch. RiverTree runs over 40 groups and activities.

This funding is to support a group of adults with mobility issues that would not visit the gym but who wish to exercise. The money will fund the delivery, room hire and advertising of the group.


Town Hall Foundation

The Town Hall Foundation is the charitable arm of Town Hall Dental focused on providing oral healthcare treatments and education for those who need it the most.

They are applying for funding to support their oral health education program linked with special education schools across Kirklees. The funding will support the design, creation, and printing of a bespoke “Super Smiles” educational resource that will be aimed at children with learning disabilities from the ages of 6-10 years. Their Super Smiles program will also be delivered in relevant specialist provisions schools across Kirklees and Calderdale.


Trillz CIC

TRILLZ were initially started by a group of young people who were victims of Child Sexual/Criminal exploitation and Human Trafficking.

Funding will allow them to offer a package of support to Oak Primary School in Huddersfield, based around increasing pupil aspirations and improving behaviour.


Uniform Exchange

The overall purpose of Uniform Exchange is to ensure all children across Kirklees have access to good school uniform helping to reduce social deprivation and improve access to learning.

The funding will allow them to deliver coats to local schools requesting support, to provide administration support and provide families with additional essentials and allow them to wash items before they are donated.


West Yorkshire ADHD Support Group

£1850

The group supports adults with ADHD, parents/carers of children with ADHD, and children with ADHD and their siblings. They offer support both post diagnosis and whilst waiting for an assessment.

Funding will cover their transport and parking costs associated with supporting parents and carers to attend meetings and appointments for 12 months.
