Step 1
The first step of the referral process is to complete the relevant age screening tool for the child you are wanting to refer. You will need to save and upload this document in the next step of the referral.
This screening tool will identify what support you can give the child in your setting and what advice you could offer to parents / carers.
They are designed to support referrers in deciding when to refer to the Speech and Language Therapy service (SLT). This is based on the service’s referral criteria which can be found here.
If a child scores a green rating, this suggests that their speech, language and communication skills are developing within the expected range. However if you would like some additional advice on universal strategies and targeted interventions, this can be found here.
Children who score an amber rating will require support with their speech and language development in their setting and at home. You should look for advice on universal strategies and targeted interventions found here. After implementing the advice/strategies and monitoring progress for three months, you should then refer to SLT if they continue to achieve an amber rating for their age on the appropriate SLCN screening tool.
Children who score a red rating will require a referral into our service. You should look for advice on universal strategies and targeted interventions found here to support the child while the referral is processed.
