Walking aids

Children require walking aids for various reasons. They may be used as a transition to walking unaided or may support a child who has much more limited movement to be able to experience stepping and moving safely on their feet.

For children who have movement disorders a walking aid can be an important part of their postural care plan.

Walking aids can:

  • Give a child the freedom to move on a level with his peers/family
  • Help improve hip stability
  • Improve cardiovascular fitness
  • Help progress a child’s physical skills and strength

There are various walking aids available, some of which are listed below. Your Physiotherapist will speak to you about what type of walking aid will best meet yours and your child’s needs.
