As part of Occupational Therapy support a specialist bed may be looked at for a child/ young person. This will be considered if a standard bed would compromise safety and comfort. Specialist beds as with other equipment have a wide range, from standard profiling beds to complex high sided and cot beds. As the need is assessed on an individual basis different additions can be added to beds as required including accessories to support PEG feeds, night time oxygen and specialist pressure care mattresses alongside different textures of padding and size of bed sides for support. Before a decision around a bed, or a change of bed is completed a discussion will be held with the child/ young person, family/ carer to determine what the desired outcome of the bed provision is.
