My work experience opportunity with Locala

My name is Ashleigh Hodgson, I am 17 years old and currently studying BTEC Level 3 Health and Social care at Huddersfield New College. I have always been interested in working with children but undecided on which field, so when I received an email from my tutor regarding a summer volunteering experience working with children I was excited for the opportunity. This summer, I volunteered at mother and baby sessions as part of the KAL/Locala partnership. Every Monday I attended my local sports centre, from 9:30-12:30 taking part in sessions called Music and movement and a distraction session. In the first session, music and movement, parents and children would play and learn together, we held the session in a large open space with soft toys for the children to play with. We also gave children the opportunity to use musical instruments we had available, such as bells, and constantly played a children's CD with popular nursery rhymes for the children to listen to. This session allowed me to work with both children and parents together; I enjoyed watching the bond between the parent and child in a new environment. It put a smile on my face to see that I could impact children's lives by teaching through music.

The second session, distraction, allowed me to work more independently with the children. This was an exercise session for the mothers whilst a qualified nursery nurse and I distracted and played with the children so the mothers could exercise knowing their child was cared for. The mothers could always see and have access to their child and if the child had issues during the session such as crying or needing to feed, then the mother still had full parental responsibilities. I loved having this responsibility and it was highly beneficial for me to witness how grateful and thankful the mothers were after each session just for the care we provided. I feel privileged to have worked so closely with the children and trusted so much by each parent. This volunteering experience was initially only supposed to last over summer for myself, however I thoroughly enjoyed the sessions so much that I have been in contact with Locala again to see if I can continue volunteering. Overall, this experience was inspired me to peruse a career in caring for children, it has been a useful way to spend my time over summer and I wish to continue my experience with Locala further. The company have been fantastic, always in contact when I had any questions and made sure I didn't have far to travel for the sessions. I loved my volunteering experience and would recommend to anyone who loves working with children and would like an amazing experience close to home.
