Bowled over by cricket event success

Children with disabilities have had the chance to step out onto the cricket field and learn new skills through the sport as part of a programme supported by the Locala Community Fund.

Opening up cricket opportunities for the wider community has been a key objective for Mount Cricket Club at Batley, helping to ensure children with disabilities have the same right to play and the same right to equal access in sporting, recreational and leisure activities.

The Club recently held its third annual Disability & Cricket Fun Day allowing families with children with disabilities to come and try cricket assisted by the Clubs' coaches.

Mark Sanders, Locala Chairman commented:

"Local organisations like Mount Cricket Club make a fantastic contribution to community life. It is such a pleasure to support the Club as they serve their local community. It is what being a social enterprise is all about and we are all delighted to assist groups and projects that can make such a difference.

"Over the last few years the 'Locala Community Fund' has supported some inspiring projects and we are pleased that our support was put into a worthwhile endeavour by Mount Cricket Club".

Mariam who brought her sons Raees and Azaan to the event said it had been a really enjoyable day: "Thank you for organising a fantastic day for our special children, we all enjoyed it very much. My Raees had a brilliant time today and Azaan was very happy to be involved in the activities too. It made mum very proud when he got his special award".

Mark Arthur, Chief Executive of Yorkshire Cricket, attended the event and said: "I was very impressed with Mount Cricket Club's Disability Cricket Open Day. The children had a great time, and that is what cricket is all about. They were really proud of their medals and personalised certificates."

Abdul A Ravat, Development Officer from Mount Cricket Club expressed his delight:

"With so much happening at the Club we are delighted with this initiative which is now an integral part of our annual programme. It was heartening to see the dedication of our coaches and volunteers working with the children and their families, even though the facilities we have at the 'Field of Dreams' are modest.

"The children really enjoyed themselves, some of whom had never held a bat and ball and so proud that we are able to serve our community and put smiles on so many faces".

Locala's Community Fund offers grants of up to £1,000 to support the work of local community, not-for-profit and charity groups. There are two rounds of funding available each year and more details are available on the Community Fund page.
