Children's Occupational Therapy

The Children's Occupational Therapy service is based in the Children's Centre at Dewsbury & District Hospital. We are part of a multi-disciplinary team which includes Physiotherapy, Speech & Language Therapy and Play. Our core team liaises and works closely with other disciplines and agencies in the Health Service, Education Service, Local Authority and other settings.

General Information

We accept referrals of children with special needs from birth to 16 years of age from Consultant Paediatricians and Community Paediatricians (children’s doctors).

We treat a variety of conditions which may present with a delay or difficulty in acquiring physical, social and educational skills. We use specific activities, often combined with handling and positioning techniques, to promote the child's development to higher level skills.  Adaptations to equipment and the child's environment may also be needed to enhance his/her development, as may advice regarding specific techniques, such as writing, feeding, dressing, etc.

A variety of treatment techniques are used by the team and may include; Sensory Integration, Bobath, Neurodevelopment, Multi-sensory - whichever is appropriate for the child.  A multi-disciplinary approach to all children with special needs is the most effective way of delivering holistic care.

Treatment is usually at the Children's Centre (DDH) or in the child's home or school. Children receive treatment either individually or within a group, depending on the needs and age of the child.

Treatment is usually at the Children's Centre or in the child's home or school. When appropriate children may also be treated on the ward at Dewsbury & District Hospital but these are usually children already on our caseload or new referrals from the neo-natal unit.
