Dementia Friends Event

As a member of Kirklees Dementia Action Alliance (KDAA), Locala was recently presented with a Kirklees Dementia Friendly Award by Councillor Paul Kane, Mayor of Kirklees, in recognition of our work towards becoming dementia friendly. Quality Managers Sheila Sorby and Victoria Jones and Allanna Brown and Tracey Valentine from the Continence Service (who are part of Locala’s Dementia Awareness Group) are pictured here with the award.

Following the presentation of this award, we have been working in partnership with KDAA to put together an event for Locala members, to raise awareness and provide skills in supporting people with dementia. We held our first Dementia Friends Event for members on Thursday 9 July in the Engaging Space at Brian Jackson House, Huddersfield. The event was a great success, attracting around 35 members, both Colleague and Community members.

The event included a series of talks by guest speakers from Kirklees Action Dementia Alliance who set the scene by explaining what KDAA are doing locally; Locala Quality Manager, Sheila Sorby from Locala's Dementia Awareness Group spoke about Locala’s journey towards becoming dementia friendly; Samantha Jones, Kirklees Safe Places Coordinator showed an excellent video and described how vulnerable people can find help when out and about locally. The event also included a one hour Dementia Friends session by Monika Tomaszewicz from Making Space, Dementia Support Services Kirklees, who helped those attending understand about the many different aspects of dementia and its effects on family, friends and those suffering with dementia. Following a series of activities, everyone in attendance was awarded with a ‘Dementia Friend’ badge and asked to make an online pledge about how they will turn their understanding into action. The event was rounded off by Community Member Members’ Council representative, Margaret Couch, who described her personal experience of being a carer of a person with dementia.

We held our first Dementia Friends Event for members on Thursday 9 July in the Engaging Space at Brian Jackson House, Huddersfield, and a follow up evening event at Dewsbury Town Hall on Tuesday 15 September. Both events were a great success, attracting around 40 members, both Colleagues and Community members.
