Who is DAFNE?

Service update

Following national guidance our DAFNE Diabetes courses are currently suspended.

Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating

A way of managing Type 1 diabetes by working out how much insulin you need to take for what you want to eat. This approach has been used in Europe since the 1980s and piloted in Britain in 2000 and is now a nationally delivered programme. The Locala diabetes specialist nurses organised and introduced the course for Huddersfield in 2010 and are members of the collaborative and regional network.

What does it involve?

Currently DAFNE involves attending a 5 day training course with around 7 other people who also have type 1 diabetes. The group meet again 6-8 week later for a half day follow up. The structured teaching programme is run by a trained diabetes specialist nurse and diabetes specialist dietitian. It focuses on skills and built around group work covering topics including carbohydrate counting, manging diabetes, insulin actions, eating out to name but a few.

The benefits

DAFNE has proven to reduce HbA1c without increasing severe hypoglycaemia, increase quality of life and improve satisfaction with treatment. It is recommended by the National Institute of clinical excellence.
